Aslan back?
After a demonstration against Billy Harris and then a tight match against Frances Tiafoe in the crushing heat of Atlanta, the Russian is the logical favorite against Cristian Garin who is beginning his transition to hard court.
Let's get straight to the point. While Garin was coming out of some great qualifiers at Wim, we felt he was capable of bothering Shang, but no. His "depressive tennis" is back. Again and again. Then he lost in the quarterfinals of a Challenger on clay, then first in Bastad against Kotov. Needless to say, I don't really trust him. This guy was good, even very good, but for several years now he's had a few flashes of brilliance here and there, and that's it. For me, he's generally too fragile in the head. And if Aslan normally plays well, he's going to take pressure that he doesn't like to receive. I'm basing this on the most recent example I have in mind with his match against Shang at Wim in which Garin was simply overwhelmed by the power (among other things) of his opponent. I know he can play well on hard, but I think he needs to get his bearings a bit before he can regain the confidence that is so important to him. Because he has played 5 matches on hard this year, for 2 wins...
