The equation with one unknown
Medvedev on the verge of defeat yesterday against a huge Medjedovic certainly, but with Daniil unusually not very combative throughout the second set with a lot of double faults. What version will we have today?
Daniil is a chess player. Yesterday he played badly, and he wins again and again. He took Medjedovic into a sort of limp battle while making him soup. In the 3rd set for example, the most important set of the match obviously, seeing that he was not in shape he went back into wall mode with a ball without much consistency to make Hamad Medjedovic miss. He always finds a solution, he impresses me every time. You have the impression that he plays 10 times worse than his opponent, but very often, he passes. Against Paul, he found the solution 3 times out of 3, even on clay! Tommy Paul doesn't like this type of confrontation because he has to finish the points much more often than usual. He almost found the keys at Indian Wells this year and came close to victory. But he's going to have to get out of his comfort zone a little. Hamad gave us some ideas yesterday, with a lot of drop shots on Daniil's forehand, a lot of low slices on his forehand, all alternated with good big kicks. The problem is that Paul doesn't have the power of Hamad, nor even the creativity I want to say. He created his reputation on his strength and mobility, and in this game, Daniil is stronger... But! The question that torments me is: why did Daniil show such a dull face yesterday? His game, his combativeness and his movement were not as usual. Does his groin injury in Madrid have more consequences than we think? Three matches end at 11 p.m., the guy doesn't go to bed before 1 a.m.... Which makes me think that Paul will perhaps "simply" play the card of the ultra-strong guy who makes Daniil move back to front...
