My taylor is Fritz
The American gave us a masterclass in realism against Raonic: a break point in the match converted on an outside line passing, 3 break points saved out of 3 on his serve, and only 2 points gained in addition to his opponent in the match. Thompson has been warned!
I sometimes have a little trouble reading Fritz. Good everywhere, great resilience, sometimes collapses. Then I tell myself that it's often the bad things that we remember the most. Because if we look at his season, especially since the time on clay, we realize quite easily that the guy is always there. The former world No. 5 didn't have a great run last season on grass, but a bit like Korda, I have the impression that he passed a mental milestone this season. His consistency throughout the tournaments is an excellent witness to this, especially on clay, the surface he likes the least. We all say to ourselves that Thompson's playfulness won't be enough, but that would be ignoring the beauty of tennis. If indeed Fritz has a higher average level, it is enough for Thompson to take him on 2-3 painful points and hold him from the baseline to put a grain of sand in Fritz's head. A drop in confidence follows, the first one passes less and bam, you lose the set. Is this the most likely scenario? I do not think so. Thompson lacks a bit of rhythm and is coming off 5 defeats in a row before the tournament. Let's still see the odds for this match, but I'm quite pessimistic personally... 👇
