Is Ofner still bad?
There is nothing in his last performances to suggest the opposite...
I've written the last articles here on Ofner, and nothing has changed! He lost to Opelka in straight sets in his first match in Toronto. It was a low-quality match, with poor performances from both players. It is also clear that Ofner has no confidence whatsoever; he missed many easy shots at the wrong moments. As for Royer, I found him solid in qualifying, given his wins over Ficovich and Draxl. It felt as if he was slightly fueled by the stinker performance he had against Arseneault in Toronto...
As for this match, I find it quite hard to analyze. Ofner has not looked right at all since Wimbledon, and while I was happy to lay him against Opelka in his first hardcourt match just shortly after Kitzbuhel, it could be a bit different now. Since he had an early exit, at least he has had plenty of time to prepare for this match. I'm still trying to figure out exactly what the issue is with Ofner... if it's just a confidence issue or something that is physically bothering him as well? He played a lot of clay matches shortly after returning from an injury earlier... I wouldn't be surprised if we see a better level from Ofner today; at least he is playing in faster conditions where he can do some damage with his serve and forehand without overcomplicating things. Having said that, I do question his ability to sustain it, cause his performance in the last matches has not been even close to what his real level is. Royer is having a good season and has the tools to extend rallies. With Ofner's lack of confidence and rally tolerance, he might be able to extract enough errors...
