Benny manages?
Shelton is clearly turning a corner, he's formidable to play
Another victory for Shelton yesterday, it wasn't exceptionally good but he's finally managing to win matches when he's not playing his best tennis. That's where he makes the difference, especially since his monstrous service quality protects him even on a bad day. The sequence after Toronto could have been tough but with the various delays in the schedule and the fact that with this 10-day M1000 format the players have quite a few days off, well it's perfect for Shelton. His final was on the 8th, it's the 14th and he played a big set against Carabelli and only two against Agut, that seems okay to me. On the other hand, a big match tonight against Lehecka. The Czech is capable of being ultra-efficient in these fast conditions, he'll be hard to break and can impose a big rhythm from the baseline! But I wonder if it's not perfect for Shelton, with his new tactics he was super good against Fritz, Khachanov and quite a few players that he managed to neutralize. He returns better than before, concedes fewer aces and plays from the baseline, that's all it takes to annoy Lehecka who in any case for his part can't return and should fight more often on his service games. I remember their match on grass well, Lehecka was non-existent on the return and was frustrated not to have chances on the return in a choppy match.
