Unlimited Hype
Despite having played quite poorly for a while, Fonseca is treated as a top 10 player!
And yeah... I can understand the hype, cause Fonseca's ceiling is so high and that kind of firepower is exciting! However, his floor is not high at the moment, and there are still many things to work on. For me, the biggest weakness is glaringly obvious... his tennis IQ and shot selection. His match against Draper in RG made that very visible... he was unable to hit through Draper, so he went for plan B instead - HIT THE BALL EVEN HARDER! Atmane was outstanding in Cincinnati, but Fonseca was not even competitive in that match. He should have lost easily to Fokina, but got lucky that the Spaniard was injured just as he was about to close the match. Let's not talk about that loss to Schoolkate in Toronto. You can see that there are quite a few examples! Since a strong start to the season with a semifinal in Adelaide and a title in Delray Beach, Kecmanovic has been struggling. He did win two rounds now in Winston-Salem, but it was against a tired Darderi and a poor Kovacevic. His matches prior to that have not been too good either...
This matchup presents Fonseca with a good opportunity to get back on track. Kecmanovic really struggles against Attacking Baseliners (which is what Fonseca is), and I don't think the matchup is bad for Fonseca either. I will mention that Kecmanovic is fantastic at raising his level for Grand Slams, so don't count him out. For Fonseca, he gets an opponent that is good at many things but not excellent at anything, and I think that is good for him. Kecmanovic is also not in his best phase, so Fonseca could perhaps get away with a few dips in this match, more so than he could against other players right now. Fonseca will be fired up for this one and has been on site for a while, having completed some good practice sets against top players (yes, I know, I can't account for this too heavily). It might not be smooth sailing, but this feels like a great chance for Fonseca to get his Grand Slam started the right way.
