Can Comesana steady his game?
Michelsen's pace challenges Comesana's faltering form on hard courts...
I've done quite a few previews for Comesana lately, and I will continue to say that he is not playing his best tennis right now. He is fighting, but he has a lot of holes in his game right now. He is supposed to be a rally-tolerant Counterpuncher, but that becomes really hard when you keep missing routine balls! His results lately might look OK on paper with a few wins here and there, but most of them were against struggling opponents. His last two losses were against Rublev and Bellucci, where he got rolled over. Michelsen is doing alright, he reached his first QF in a Masters in Toronto and had some good matches, but I feel like he is not in his peak form either. He is coming off a loss against Rune in Cincinnati.
Normally, this matchup could present an issue for Michelsen, as he dislikes facing speedy counterpunchers. However, playing on a decently fast hard court, along with Comesana's shaky form, significantly boosts his chances here. We've seen Comesana struggle significantly in his last two matches against players who can rush him and play a fast-paced game. Michelsen will surely look to play this kind of game to avoid getting dragged into longer rallies... We know Comesana has the ability to perform well on faster surfaces like hardcourt and grass (notably with great runs in Wimbledon and the US Open last year), but I think with his current form, it will be challenging to replicate the results he had last year. At the same time, Michelsen might have some dips in this match as well. He has a lot of issues keeping his level throughout a match, and his form is not amazing either. Yes, we need to consider the odds here...
