Facing the Old Nemesis

Botic gets a tough first-round draw against a player who stole his title a few years back...

And what a sequence it will be for Botic! He made it to the finals in Winston-Salem (on Saturday), but unfortunately, the run to the final took a lot out of him, leaving him less than 100 percent. Fucsovics was able to fully take advantage of this and won in straight sets despite a comeback from a double-break down in the second set from Botic. Despite some struggles along the way, we saw quite a bit of the level of Botic that has given him the "Giant Slayer" nickname. Despite a recent quarterfinal in Cincinnati, I think it's fair to say that Rune has not been outstanding lately. His run in Cincinnati featured Safiullin, Michelsen, and a Tiafoe who retired... not exactly the toughest opponents to reach a quarterfinal in a Masters. Before that, he got somewhat destroyed by Popyrin in Toronto in the third round, having won against Muller and Mpetshi Perricard prior.

As for the matchup, they have an epic history. They have faced each other twice, both times in the Munich final (2022 and 2023). Botic had to retire in the first set in their first meeting (due to breathing issues), but their second match was epic. Botic had a 5-2 lead in the decider, served for the match twice, had multiple MPs on return, and still lost against a Rune who was not moving properly. Rune was able to really get into his head with MTOs and hobbling around while still being able to fire huge winners and having sudden speed bursts. Botic's nerves in a final, combined with his uncertainty about how to play against an injured opponent, really threw him off, and he struggled to perform well on the tour for about a year after this match - yes, it definitely left scars!

Let's talk about the actual matchup. Botic is a Solid Baseliner with the ability to play a very balanced and complete game. A good first serve, deep returns, excellent court coverage, and a lot of firepower from his forehand, especially. Botic excels at playing deep, consistently hitting with good depth that prevents opponents from benefiting from short balls, making him very hard to hit through. Once he finds a good opening, he transitions to offense really well, usually with a deep shot into either corner, followed by a swift net approach (he has great instincts for this). By the way I'm describing him, you could think I was talking about a top 5 player... but Botic at his peak is very good! His issues are that he can also be quite streaky, and he lacks mental strength in high-pressure moments. Rune is an Attacking Baseliner who has a much more offensive positioning inside the baseline. While this allows him to hit some nice return winners now and then, I find his return game very inconsistent, and I would say it is one of his weaknesses (the return); he just does not put enough balls back in play - that's why he struggles against Big Servers. While he is listed as an Attacking Baseliner, he is definitely not all-out offense... Rune has great rally tolerance (when he wants to), good tennis IQ, and a lot of variety. His biggest issue, besides returning (and fitness in challenging conditions), is that he can get impatient and play the wrong shots or force something. Botic can definitely trigger that part of Rune with his defensive skills (a bit like Medvedev, playing deep but hitting with a lot of depth). However, the fact that he is coming from a final, where he was not 100% and lost, to having to play a best-of-5 with just a minimum amount of rest, is a big concern. If he is not 100% physically fit for this, it becomes a lot more complicated... that's what happened in the final, and you could see him struggling to properly transition from defense into offense; it was just a bit sloppy, and he had a hard time recovering from defensive positions. At the same time, Botic surely has a grudge against Rune for what happened in that final, and we could see a Botic that comes out flying, forgetting about nerves and physical struggles. As you can tell by the lengthy preview, we have an interesting match ahead of us...
