Wounded Warriors
The big question for this match is... who is the least injured?
Arnaldi recently opened up about his recent struggles, saying he can't find consistency due to the numerous injuries he has sustained lately (ankle, shoulder, and now foot). He is unable to focus on tennis and must also cut his training time short due to pain. He also says some of his "key moves" are affected, such as sliding and serving. This explains some of Arnaldi's performances lately, because they have not been up to his standards. Cerundolo has also been injured, but instead of playing through it, he has been out since retiring with an abdominal injury against Zverev in Toronto. He was supposed to play Cincinnati, but withdrew from the tournament.
This match will largely come down to who is the least injured, with such big question marks for both. Abdominal injuries tend to be quite nasty, but at least Cerundolo has been resting up a bit, and there is a possibility he could come out completely fine. With Arnaldi, it is very likely that he is not 100%, if we choose to trust his recent statements. Credit to Arnaldi for fighting through it, but yes, it's very obvious that he is not performing like he has in the past. In his last matches, I have found him very erratic and "lost" on the court. Strange shot selections, hesitating, and lack of confidence... Playing a best of five surely is not ideal either with his current state... even though it might not be for Cerundolo either!
