Two Americans in the East

After battling in Delray Beach earlier this year, we get a rematch in a very different location...

Giron was really struggling during the American HC swing, but at least managed to finish it a bit better with an epic five-setter against Navone and then a great performance against Bonzi in the first two sets before his legs gave out. I'm not sure we can say he regained his level, but at least we saw some glimpses of the good version of Giron in those last two matches. Quinn's season has slowed down a bit since he got off to a very hot start in Australia and rode the momentum all the way through to the end of the clay season. His hardcourt season in America followed the same pattern... winning his first rounds somewhat easily before losing his second rounds. His opponents were quite hard for him: Nakashima/Nakashima/Mensik/Kym (on fire)... something worth keeping in mind!

Giron tends to perform quite well on faster surfaces, but I prefer him in even more controlled conditions, such as lower altitudes and indoor hardcourt. I would say the matchup is decent for him; he is quite good against one-dimensional pace. He also has a strong record in opening rounds of ATP 250s and a good record against other American players. We know what we will get with Quinn... decent serving, big forehands, and game plan A without many options to change if it doesn't work. Quinn doesn't have any experience in this part of the world, but the conditions should suit him decently. He has shown that he is quite capable of playing in most conditions and on various surfaces this year. Giron more or less destroyed him and was untouchable on serve in their previous meeting in Delray Beach. Will it be the same this time? Has Quinn improved since then, or has Giron gotten worse? Or will this be another matchup that is really hard for Quinn, like against Nakashima?
