The Formless against the potentially injured

Halys is coming in with zero form, and O'Connell recently retired with a back injury...

So, who do we choose? Well, let's start with Halys. His form is absolutely abysmal, having not won on hardcourt in his last five matches, including losses to Ficovich in Los Cabos and Glinka in Cassis. And one of the worst matches of the USO against Goffin! So, yes, there haven't been many positives for Halys lately. O'Connell already got some matches under his belt in China, going to the SFs in Guangzhou CH before having to retire in the third game against Tabilo. He was a sizeable favorite in all three of his matches, but I found him quite good, especially his serving!

So, I prefer O'Connell in this matchup, especially under the present circumstances. Halys is lacking confidence, and I'm not sure if 500m of altitude is going to help with that, making the ball harder to control. O'Connell tends to be quite decent against Big Servers; he struggles more against Counter Punchers or relentless Attacking Baseliners. They did face in 2023 in Dubai, where both players liked the conditions, and O'Connell won 7-6, 7-6... but he was untouchable on serve while making some inroads on Halys' serve. We have to be aware that Halys's game can click, and he can go on a run, especially in faster conditions like these... he has big weapons! I do want to point out some stats in Halys' favour... he tends to cover the HCP when he is in the 2.01 - 2.50 range very well, especially in the first round of ATP 250s ;) So, we have some data that supports Halys, even though the matchup and current form seem to be pointing toward O'Connell. Regarding his injury, I'm leaning toward it being mostly a precaution, he has a problem stringing many matches together... we've seen it many times before. He retires after a few matches in a tournament and comes back and plays the next week. OK, let's look at the odds a bit...
