Stand up Mumu!
Alex Muller is currently ranked at the best of his career (No. 38), but paradoxically, he hasn't been playing his best tennis for three or four months now. What's that?
And yes, judge for yourself. Since Roland Garros, he has 8 defeats for 3 victories. His defeats are against tough guys, but there are quite a few sets where he still takes a beating. He admitted that he struggled with his serve and that it had a big impact because he had to fight on absolutely every point now. After the US Open, he withdrew from Chengdu due to adductor discomfort and/or the birth of his child (he played a doubles match on August 29 at the US Open, 3 days after his defeat against Tsitsi, and played at 30% because of his adductors). Let's just say that there's a chance that his form isn't at its best today. We're in Beijing, the balls are slow, it's great for him. But he's a guy who needs rhythm. He explained at the beginning of the year that he had been performing well thanks to big training sessions in Dubai with Goffin and Sinner. Khacha's performance isn't great either. Since his final in Toronto, we thought he was going to tear it up at the US Open, but it had the opposite effect: he pushed to the point of retiring against Zverev in Cincinnati, then played 2 average matches at the US Open. Almost a month later, where is he? Well, I think Beijing suits him very well too, and it's perfect for recharging and playing a big tournament before the end of the season. In any case, his rating doesn't excite me much, and we can take all the time we need to watch this R1 to anticipate future values. Because here, the matchup suits him well, I think, and I have no desire to back Mumu.
