The diva of the tour?

Fonseca manages his schedule very meticulously; he chooses his tournaments and leaves nothing to chance.

I’m a bit on the fence about how Fonseca is being managed. I like that he’s not stringing tournaments together until he’s burnt out and playing badly. But there’s a middle ground, and to me he’s not playing enough, especially given his sometimes a bit disappointing results. He decided to totally skip the Asian swing to focus on the indoor swing—now he’s got to own it! And if he messes up, what conclusions do we draw? It’s risky, and getting experience in Asia would’ve been interesting too. In any case, no physical issues if anyone was wondering! He’s played the Laver Cup and Davis Cup since the US Open and it was pretty solid; now we’ll see what he does indoors. He’s already played indoors in Davis Cup, at the Next Gen, and in a few Challengers—results far from bad—and anyway he’s going to play well on all surfaces. And he’s already beaten VDZ indoors, by the way, so I’m not sure the Dutchman still has any real edge over the Brazilian right now. The thing with VDZ is that, in general, when you don’t expect it, he pulls out monstrous matches against top players sometimes—that’s what makes him dangerous. But the rest of the time he’s dragging himself around the court and cracks under pressure in the big moments; I can totally see Fonseca pulling off a comeback even if he’s way behind in this one. I still think the Brazilian has enough variety (including his net game and baseline power) to hurt VDZ too much, so there are plenty of scenarios where it’s Fonseca who comes out on top.
