Same Old Sonego?

We see big effort in Slams and a few select tournaments...

But what about the rest? A lot of first-round eliminations. It's usually the same: he comes out and looks a bit pumped up, has a good start, is unable to keep that level, dips, and fades. His losses to Giron, Zverev, and Hanfmann during the Asian Swing are not the end of the world, but it's hard to feel convinced about Sonego's form at the moment. Fery played a great match against Buse in the first round (who put up a decent fight despite lacking indoor experience), but his match against Clarke was not as good. Nonetheless, he got the win and made the main draw. Fery is very confident on indoor hardcourts, and it shows in his game. I find him quite clean from both wings; he controls the ball quite well and can spread the court nicely, especially with his ability to go down/up the line with his BH. So yes, he is solid, and the floor level is good... but there is a limit to his ceiling for me. So if he is facing a higher-level player who is having a good day, the match is not really on his racket. Sonego can be that kind of player, and we prefer him in this role with an aggressive mindset instead of a defender! The big question, as always with Sonego in a first-round, is what kind of Sonego will we get for this tournament?
