Indeed, I followed both players throughout the week, and I’ve got two takeaways. 1: Moutet is super motivated and playing really well again. 2: Mochizuki almost got past the Michelsen hurdle. Which means that this kind of varied, crafty game has proven effective against the American. So why didn’t the Japanese player win? Because in the third set, he ran out of gas. He was still the better player on court, though. And when Alex was asked how he had to react tactically to win, he basically said: “well, I won by sticking to my game profile, and I knew it would come through at some point.” What I hear is, “I don’t have a plan B, guys!” And given Coco’s profile, form, and ambition, he’s my pick here. I had compared Struff to Griekspoor to describe the matchup with Corentin yesterday, but Struff couldn’t last from the back of the court, whereas Griekspoor and Michelsen have a bit more engine from the baseline—on top of being good at attacking and coming forward to the net. But seeing how Corentin neutralized Struff’s power and aggressiveness, starting with the return, I wouldn’t be at all surprised to see him come through here.
