When inconsistency reigns, you have to pick your risk: Cobolli, a bet worth taking.

Here we have two of the hardest players to read on this ATP tour in my opinion.

Player 1: Tomas Machac, sometimes very strong, often injured, sometimes flat.

The Czech started the year very well, notably with a very nice title in Acapulco, before dropping off sharply, often hampered by injuries. Better at the US Open? Relapse in Shanghai with a knee injury, unable to defend his chances against Vacherot. When everything is going well, I really like this player. He’s incisive, fast, solid but capable of being very aggressive; he’s truly a top player but unfortunately fragile, and that’s become even more pronounced. Which version will we get tomorrow? I honestly can’t say, and I haven’t found any specific info about him since Shanghai.

Player 2: Flavio Cobolli, hallmark: chronically inconsistent!

The Italian blows hot and cold. Like Machac, he’s sometimes brilliant and sometimes hugely disappointing. Unlike the Czech, his season has been generally very good, even if he seems a bit off at this end of the season.

So it’s a match with a lot of uncertainty waiting for us tomorrow, but I think the Italian offers a bit more of a guarantee than the Czech. I’ll also add that the conditions should suit him a bit better than in Almaty, where he disappointed against Duckworth.
