Arnaldi, struggling against the German wall?

Zverev, looking physically solid, seems ready to lay down the law indoors

As we had imagined, the first round was tricky for Zverev. However, it’s worth acknowledging that it was more thanks to the excellent level shown by Fearnley than because of a poor performance from the German. And above all—and this is clearly the most important—he showed no signs of the shoulder injury that was feared after the Six Kings Slam. An overall reassuring first round for the German.

On the other side, Arnaldi had an easier match against Kovacevic—nothing major to report; he was just a bit too solid for the American, who was frankly average in this match.

The German is obviously a heavy favorite; he has a day off today and I expect him to ramp up here against an opponent who has once again shown weaknesses in these indoor conditions.

This will be their third meeting in 2025, the first two on outdoor hard, and each time Arnaldi took the first set in a tiebreak before being dominated by the German, which could suggest that Zverev’s game matches up quite well against the Italian.

That said, based on Arnaldi’s recent impression and this R1 from Zverev that I found rather convincing, I don’t see the same scenario and expect a more routine win for Zverev.
