Can robot-like consistency beat athleticism and talent?

Nakashima's 2025 was not great... a repeating pattern of a win or two here and there, but not a particularly strong streak of form at any point. A lot of it has to do with the fact that while his floor level is good and consistent, his ceiling also feels very limited. Why is that? Well, a lack of variety, athleticism, and also the fact that he is prone to being rushed by big hitters (also, the young players tend to play faster and hit bigger). He has struggled in Australia, with a 1-9 HCP record since 2022. According to updates on his social media, he has been working hard this offseason. Let's see if he can surprise us ;)

Fokina is coming off a fantastic 2025. Multiple deep runs on different surfaces, good matches against the top players, and 4 finals... there's only one thing missing! I'm sure you can guess what it is... a title. More than anything, he was able to play consistently throughout pretty much the entire year, which is something he has struggled with in the past. Now, after a few exhibitions during the offseason, can he carry his 2025 momentum into 2026?

On paper, this is a tough matchup for Nakashima - for multiple reasons. Fokina is a great returner with a strong record against Big Servers, so that negates Nakashima's main advantage straight away. Fokina is great at taking the ball early and playing fast, which allows him to rush Nakashima, something he really struggles with. If that was not bad enough, he is also someone who plays with variety, won't give Nakashima a lot of rhythm, and can also bring him to the net (which he also hates). Lastly, he has a huge advantage when it comes to explosiveness and movement. Yeah, this really does not look good for Nakashima, does it? Now, I have to try to find some things in his favor as well. Well, it's the first time he plays Brisbane, which is notoriously "server-friendly", so maybe he can get some more free points on serve. It's also early in the season, which means Fokina is likely to be a bit less in rhythm from the baseline, possibly opening the doors for a few more quicker Nakashima points. Lastly, his extended prep in Australia compared to Fokina's "Mr Exhibition Worldwide" could lead to a bit of a stronger start for Nakashima? That's it...
