Finally a Ukrainian victory?

Yastremska is once again going to face her little Canadian nemesis

Fourth meeting between the two players, with a 3–0 head-to-head in favor of the Canadian. The Ukrainian gave herself a real scare in her first match, which she won in two very tight sets, 7/6 7/6, a rather flattering score given how the match actually went. The local player Gibson had even done the hardest part in the second set by serving for the set, before Dayana showed herself to be particularly clutch. There were no fewer than 10 breaks in the match.

The Ukrainian’s very risky style of play, going all-in on almost every shot, is clearly a double-edged sword. On the other hand, she handles pressure moments very well and has reached the second round here in Brisbane for the first time. In her interview, she insists on the confidence gained from this first win of the season. Yastremska is once again getting closer to her career-high ranking, with a top 20 spot clearly stated as her goal. She seems to be in an excellent frame of mind, both mentally and physically.

The Canadian, for her part, has never really shone during the Australian swing. The often windy and humid conditions don’t seem to suit her as well. The match will be played on the uncovered Show Court 2. Given the number of seeded players already knocked out, we can imagine that adapting isn’t that straightforward for a first match of the season, especially against a player coming off a battle of nearly two hours.

I find the odds overall a bit poorly adjusted in this setup. What interests me most is that the games over has hit in their three previous meetings. On paper, the Canadian appears more complete, with a more controlled game, up against Yastremska’s sometimes excessive aggression. Ups and downs on both sides are therefore possible, which once again makes the games over particularly consistent.
