Both players come in winless. Who’s going to pull through?

Two defeats, but very different dynamics. Altmaier completely let go of the second set against Majchrzak (7/6 6/0). In his defense, he was up against a particularly annoying player, capable of breaking the rhythm and dragging the German out of his comfort zone. A profile that doesn’t really look like Munar’s… we’ll get back to that.

I had the chance to watch both of Munar’s matches at the United Cup, and I was pretty impressed. His opening loss to Baez might seem surprising, but there was clearly no need to throw everything away: the overall level of play was solid. Then he put up a big fight against Fritz, losing by very little against a player who’s not yet at 100%, but who is still a benchmark on hard courts. In the continuity of his 2025 season and the progress he’s shown in recent months, Munar seems more and more comfortable on this surface to me. His aggressiveness has clearly increased compared to his early days on tour, and that changes a lot of things.

This will be the 6th meeting between the two men, but the first one off clay. Munar leads 3–2 in the head-to-head, though that history isn’t very meaningful in this context.

In terms of pure match-up, the Spaniard seems to have the edge to me. He loves facing players who bring pace, and he should be able to absorb Altmaier’s ball speed to draw errors, while hitting counterpunches that he’s been executing better and better since 2025.
