An attacking left-hander can hide another one?

After Leconte/Forget… the Wish version: Atmane/Humbert.

A little French-on-French clash on the other side of the planet between two left-handers who play fast, very fast, and are constantly looking to steal time from their opponent.

Despite the loss to Norrie in Brisbane, Humbert’s match was convincing. He largely dominated for two sets, earning three match points that he couldn’t convert before eventually losing after a big battle. It was a reassuring performance both in terms of level of play and physically, especially when you consider all the issues he went through last year. Against Atmane, it shouldn’t be a fight of the same caliber as against Norrie, so there’s no particular concern on that front. His end of the 2025 season was solid, and I clearly see him continuing along that path.

On Atmane’s side, fewer noteworthy things in Brisbane: a win over Hanfmann, then a logical loss to the in-form local Duckworth. Nothing worrying, and an overall decent tournament by his standards.

Both players offer a fairly similar style: a lot of intensity, fast-paced tennis, and a constant desire to speed up the rallies. In this area, Humbert is particularly effective, and I have a hard time seeing him lose this kind of matchup. Aside from his completely crazy run in Cincinnati, Atmane still seems fragile to me, not yet a reliable contender on the main tour, and clearly below Humbert’s level at the moment.
