A Good Opportunity?
Not the best start for either player in Hong Kong...
Royer was unable to match the high level of Etcheverry in his first match of the year. He is coming off a breakthrough year in 2025, which involved a lot of wins on the Challenger level, as well as a good number of wins on the main tour level. His best run was in the ATP Hangzhou 250, where he made his way from qualification all the way to the final, and it was not against a weak draw either! However, it's a new year, and now he has to confirm his status on the main tour. A lot of matches were played last year, 96. There will (most likely) be fewer Challenger matches this year, which also likely means fewer wins due to tougher opponents.
For Comesana, 2025 was the year he started to play regularly on the main tour, and it was a bit of a mixed bag. Some great matches and battles, however, there was a lack of really stringing together a good amount of wins. He was also unable to match the level of his opponent, Shang, in Hong Kong in his first round. Both players were quite erratic from the baseline in their opening rounds and are quite evenly matched, which makes this a rather hard match to predict. I don't see any significant matchup advantage either way. With the form of both players, it would not surprise me if we see some back-and-forth momentum swings due to either player's inability to maintain a good level throughout a longer period of time...
