Not a bad first opponent to start his tournament in Auckland. Navone gave a lot of players on tour a big, physical fight in 2024 when he "broke through" from Challenger level. However, as is usually the case, he was unable to follow that up in 2025. His game is very clay-specific, so it's always going to be tough for him to string together wins on other surfaces. I did not like his opening match against Wong in Hong Kong, a match filled with a lot of ugly errors. Navone's forehand has been erratic for quite a long time now, especially under pressure. Actually, all of Navone's game just crumbles under pressure - he can not serve out sets/matches or keep a lead! 5-4, serving for the second set against Wong. Lost it 5-7, winning 1 point total in 3 games. This happened last year as well. A fighting spirit can only take you so far with a lack of confidence and limited skills.

Michelsen has a game that can really bother a one-dimensional baseliner such as Navone. Constantly changing the tempo, breaking patterns by going down the line, and charging the net. His groundstrokes are a lot more powerful, and the question is, how big a chance does Navone have to turn this into a grind on a rather fast hardcourt in a best-of-three sets? At least Navone is a good returner, which will be helpful in this matchup. Apart from that, potentially windy conditions could throw Michelsen off a bit; however, I'm not sure it's a good thing for Navone either, considering how erratic he is without the wind! Lastly, I'll mention that Michelsen tends to be a slow starter in the opening round, but keep in mind that he is coming in with great confidence from Brisbane...
