Baez was on fire at the United Cup, no one saw that coming!

The Argentine beat Munar, Fritz and Wawrinka on hard, he’s undefeated and coming here with ambitions, right? I remember a win in Winston-Salem just before a Grand Slam, and what if he pulled the same trick again this week? We’re far from that, but in general when a player is in form you have to go with him. He’s up against a dangerous profile though, Nava is explosive and capable of the very best as well as the very worst. The American is coming from qualies, he was already close to doing it in Hong Kong and after a season of improving on clay and grinding on the Challenger tour I think he’s decided to take a step up on the main tour. He really has qualities, in a single tournament he can catch fire and beat good players. High pace, high intensity and an erratic game that prevents his opponents from finding a real rhythm. He also has an interesting forward-moving game. So in short, I think there’s some small potential for him to give Baez a hard time. But in this kind of match-up it’s all or nothing: either he grabs Baez by the throat and imposes his game, or he gets worn down and completely forces his shots until he implodes. I just hope Baez will be heavily overrated by the market after his recent “performances”; I’m not forgetting that this is a special competition and that Munar on hard is still beatable, just like Fritz who is hampered by his knee.
