Mobility versus defense
Might as well flip a coin..
Cocciaretto made a liar out of me about my analysis against Bondar. To be fair, the Hungarian was at 50% and struggled against the Italian’s XXL court coverage. A more than mediocre serve. Despite her bandage, the Italian was fully present and, the few times Bondar tried to step in and attack, she got passed, which forced her to defend even more in the match. Smart.
Ruzic is surprising and has clearly chosen to go 100% into defensive mode, watching and then being decisive as soon as the opportunity arises. It’s really solid, hard to break. Proof of that: Danilovic had 13 break points but only converted two. The Croatian is like a locked prison door. Smart game, a surface that lets her be ready, she’s sharp and decisive.
Ruzic has always beaten her on hard, but from what I’m seeing in this season’s matches, we can expect things to be more balanced. Ruzic is going to have to open up her defense a bit and attack to overcome the Italian’s overflowing energy and variation.
