High Floor vs High Peak
Will Nakashima's consistency beat Botic's inconsistent brilliance?
Nakashima has been known as "The Gatekeeper" for a while now. The player who beats those he is supposed to beat and loses against the players he is "supposed" to lose to. He is someone who plays without much emotion, has a game that he can repeat every single week, at a consistent and balanced level. For a long time, he could not "shift into another gear", which, combined with his "predictability", has made it tough for him against elite opponents. He mentioned that he has focused on trying to improve this part of his game in the off-season by introducing some more variety and being more aggressive. In Brisbane, it definitely paid off - with a run to the finals and some really good performances. In the past, he has been quite a weak returner and prone to being rushed, but both these issues were less visible in Brisbane - let's see if he can keep it up. As for Botic, it was an OK week in Hong Kong, a typical 6-3,1-6, 6-1 scoreline against Struff in the opening round. He got overpowered by Bublik in a quick loss in the next round, but there is no shame in that.
Botic has a really high peak level that shows up sometimes... it has, in fact, earned him the nickname "The Giant Slayer". He has beaten most of the top players! Unfortunately, he loses a lot of matches, especially if you expect something from him. This matchup is quite tricky. Botic definitely has his chances here... as I mentioned, his peak level is much higher than Nakashima's. When he is "in the zone", he is a very complete player. However, Nakashima's consistency (especially his serving) could pose a big problem as well - if Botic is unable to get into it, the chance is that he is the one who folds first, in a tiebreak or with a bad service game...
