Shades of Munar vs Baez?

Another tricky Counterpuncher on the other side of the net...

Well, first of all, Munar's "shock" loss against Baez in the opening match of the United Cup is not looking as bad anymore! Since then, we have seen some pretty good tennis from Munar - starting where he left off in 2025, which was fantastic for him. Svrcina is another player who had a good 2025. He is mainly a challenger-level player, but he was able to have some good runs in the Asian Hardcourt season on the main tour, perhaps a bit surprisingly, given his profile. Svrcina is your classic "lightweight" Counter Puncher that has a very weak serve that gets destroyed on the main tour level. Instead, his strengths are very high rally tolerance and court coverage. This kind of player tends to get blasted off the court by the big hitters, but they can pose some problems against Solid Baseliners. The reason for this is that they can hang in rallies without getting overpowered, and the baseliners struggle to find solutions, which sometimes tends to force too much offensive play at the wrong times. This is what happened for Munar against Baez: he was forced to be the aggressor and struggled to find a way through... which led to some wrong decisions, like trying to go backhand down the line in tough positions.

They actually faced each other here in 2023 at the Australian Open, with Svrcina winning in easy straight sets... 6-3, 6-2, 6-2! I'll be honest, I can't quite remember that match. Munar is the player who has improved the most since then, especially on faster surfaces. Svrcina also has the disadvantage of only having played one match in 2026, and that was a 6-1, 6-4 lightning-quick loss to Medjedovic. So, he'll be lacking proper match rhythm, and against Munar, who has already played a lot, that could be a problem. Munar is also the ultimate professional; he has great stats when it comes to early rounds. In the end, a bit of a tricky match due to this... especially since potentially this matchup is not as easy as it might seem for Munar!
