Luciano Darderi heading toward confirmation?

The Italian exploded in 2025 with, notably, titles on clay and an entry into the top 25! A new status to live up to.

And for his comeback you can’t say he disappointed, he made a big comeback against Tabilo and came close to beating Giron. It’s not the performance of the century but it’s mainly in terms of his game that he impressed me; I’ll keep saying till the end that he can be effective on fast courts with his qualities, he’s not just a clay-courter. Especially with his huge serve and phenomenal power on the forehand side, he also looks sharper and more compact on the backhand, and we shouldn’t forget he’s young, at only 23 he still has plenty of room to improve.

A successful first tournament and now he has a seeded status to live up to, and this time he’s done well with a really nice draw, it’ll be Garin. The Chilean fought hard at the end of the 2025 season to get back into the top 100, now we’ll have to see what he does next. And for the moment it’s not exactly glorious with two losses in qualifying; in my opinion he needs a bit of time to breathe after the end of his season and then come back strong, a gradual build-up toward the Golden Swing seems likely. On hard he’s never been very flamboyant and Darderi already has almost half of his career matches on hard, which shows his experience on this surface isn’t that big. I see Darderi as the Next Gen, a clay-courter 2.0 who’s more powerful and versatile than the “old guys” like Garin, who’s had some flashes off clay but doesn’t seem as built to repeat that kind of performance.

The Chilean is fragile on serve (especially on second serve), weaker mentally, not very powerful. He’s more experienced, maybe stronger physically over the long haul (?) and that’s pretty much all I can give him; the balance clearly doesn’t tip in his favor.
