Finally a title?

The match against Ruzic this morning looked like a real little masterclass. The Croatian did try to defend, as she had all week, but there was nothing she could do: Cocciaretto was everywhere. Tempo, variety, a very clear game plan and XXL court coverage. Ruzic had no answers. The pressure was applied right from the start, with an authoritative break in both sets, and she never managed to claw her way back. In short, there was only one boss on the court.

Jovic, for her part, has tended to be on the back foot over her last two matches, dropping a set each time. She was serving for the match against Linette before the Pole’s experience completely scrambled her mind. Preston, despite being ranked around 200 in the world, also produced commanding tennis this morning by taking the first set. It’s quite rare to see Jovic outpaced in quick, short-point patterns. Unfortunately, the pressure of a first semi-final on the main tour, combined with a level that is still very ITF, caught up with her and she cracked in the third set. She had, in fact, never made it past the first round of a main-tour event. Two serious warning signs for Jovic, who has been playing non-stop for two weeks after her lost semi-final in Auckland against Svitolina. Up against an Italian brimming with confidence, for whom everything is working at the moment, I find it hard to believe that will be enough. Cocciaretto is extremely dangerous in this kind of form.
