Talk about Déjà vu for Thompson...

In last year's Australian Open, Thompson beat Koepfer (lefty) in the first round. This year, he beat JM Cerundolo (lefty). Then, he faced Borges in the second round, but Thompson was injured and lost in straight sets. This year, he looks healthier, but it's clear that he is not back to his best version, especially in terms of movement. Will last year's result repeat itself? Let's try to figure that out ;) Talking about injuries, Borges got into the second round after Auger-Aliassime retired at the start of the 4th set. Thompson was able to turn his match around against Juanma after the lefty Argentinian had a medical timeout with some issues with his left arm. Since both players got through in this special fashion, it's quite hard to judge their first rounds!

Borges has absolutely dominated this matchup in the past, even if it was some time ago. Straight sets in Estoril on clay and the same in Ilkley on Grass. It makes kind of sense, Thompson is not the kind of player to overwhelm with force (that Borges struggles with). For their upcoming match, I don't see a lot of reason why this would change, especially since we have Jordan still making his way back to full fitness and form. It's tough for him, especially since fitness has always been one of his main strengths. Borges can stay out there for as long as it takes, and currently, he should be able to outlast Thompson, if needed. Can Thompson construct the points well enough (especially using his net skills) or is he doomed to take a 4th consecutive loss against Borges?
