How can you not love Wawrinka?
Is a new miracle possible?
What a match again yesterday… almost 41 years old, a win after 4 and a half hours of effort, finishing fresher than his 20-year-old opponent. It was very far from a tennis masterpiece, but the Swiss keeps writing his legend! He embodies tennis exactly the way we love it, and nobody wants him to stop. Now he has to back it up, and there’s a big challenge waiting for him: Fritzou!
The first key factor is the heat forecast for tomorrow. The conditions are expected to be stifling, with high temperatures that will take a heavy physical toll. And that’s exactly where the gap between the two players becomes glaring. At almost 41, Wawrinka no longer has the ability to chain together prolonged efforts, and yesterday’s match will definitely leave its mark. His recovery times are longer, his movement less explosive, and his lapses much more frequent when the intensity rises.
On the other side of the net, Taylor Fritz is perfectly equipped for this kind of conditions. Physically solid, used to tournaments played in hot, dry climates, the American knows how to manage his effort while maintaining a high intensity on serve. His service games should do a lot of damage, especially since Wawrinka often struggles to return effectively when he’s under pressure.
Tactically, the scenario is quite clear. Fritz will try to impose his rhythm with his forehand and push Wawrinka to his limits by making him move side to side. The longer the match goes on, the more likely the Swiss is to lose precision, leaving short balls that Fritz loves to punish. Even if Stan can produce a few games of very high level, it’s hard to imagine that kind of consistency over the whole match, especially in these weather conditions, and especially coming right after yesterday’s match.
Finally, the overall momentum is clearly in Fritz’s favor. Younger, fresher, more consistent, he comes in with a much stronger status and confidence. He was a bit disappointing at the United Cup, but I found him convincing in these first two rounds, and he said his knee was much better than expected. Wawrinka, on the other hand, is relying mainly on his experience and mentality, weapons that are often not enough when the body can’t keep up anymore, especially in crushing heat.
So everything is lining up for a clear win for Taylor Fritz. Barring a totally improbable scenario, the American should quickly take control of the match and win without too much trouble, probably in three or four sets, fully taking advantage of conditions that further widen the physical gap between the two players.
