The long-awaited return of the Spaniard

Sara Sorribes Tormo has come back from a long way, a very long way. In April 2025, she moved the tennis world by announcing an indefinite break, admitting that she could no longer even set foot on a court. Between anxiety attacks and a total loss of enjoyment, she had even considered putting her rackets away for good. This return to competition in 2026, after treating this depression and finding herself again on the Camino de Santiago, is already a victory in itself.

But beyond the emotion, Sara is still that tireless marathon runner who never lets anything go. Able to keep a rally going for hours, she refuses to lose until her very last breath. In her first-round match here in Cluj, she showed clinical efficiency by converting most of her break points, while Yue Yuan relied on a very solid first serve (more than 70% of points won behind her first delivery) to make up for a slightly scrappy match.

This grinding style, combined with the heaviness of Yue’s ball, is the perfect recipe for a match that drags on. If Yue doesn’t finish the point quickly, she exposes herself to endless rallies where each game becomes a 10-minute battle. Sara’s strength is forcing her opponent to hit “one more ball”, over and over again.
