Logical favorite but a trap match for ADM
VDZ has nothing to lose in front of their home crowd
Botic Van de Zandschulp is coming off a very polished performance against Stefanos Tsitsipas. Probably his best match in many months. He managed to stay solid in the key moments, hold his own in the rallies and, above all, impose real intensity from the baseline to earn himself a statement victory, both in terms of level of play and confidence.
Today, the challenge is completely different. Van de Zandschulp will face a player whose profile is almost the opposite of the Greek’s. The Dutchman is going from an opponent who relies heavily on rhythm and variation to a player whose game is based on speed, consistency, and the ability to gradually smother his opponent.
De Minaur, for his part, came through without any trouble against Stan Wawrinka. An easy win if you look at the score, but one that doesn’t reflect a great match from the Australian.
The Swiss player was clearly having a bad day, lacking rhythm and consistency, which allowed De Minaur to roll through without needing to push his game or significantly raise his level.
If Van de Zandschulp wants to have a say today, he’ll have to be aggressive. That’s a must against a player like De Minaur, but it’s not necessarily easy in the slow conditions of the ATP Rotterdam. The Dutchman will have to take risks, step into the court, and accept getting out of his comfort zone, at the risk of giving the Australian plenty of counterattacking opportunities. All the more so given that De Minaur leads 3–0 in their head-to-head and clearly seems to have the upper hand in this matchup, both physically and tactically.
Despite everything, if there is a moment when Van de Zandschulp can believe in a tighter match scenario, it’s probably today. He’s playing at home, carried by the crowd, with the confidence of a very fine victory and absolutely nothing to lose. This context could allow him to swing more freely and keep the score closer for longer than expected, even if the final win remains a very difficult target.
