Rinderknech might be able to keep up in this context

Carlos Alcaraz is making his return to competition after his triumph in Melbourne at the Australian Open. A major title that allowed him to confirm his status and to approach this swing with maximum confidence. Mentally, the Spaniard is clearly coming in with a very positive momentum, fully convinced that he can impose his game on any opponent on tour.

That said, it’s still his first match in this ATP Doha tournament. As is often the case in these post-title comeback situations, we shouldn’t necessarily expect to see Alcaraz at his absolute best right from his opening match. The automatisms, top intensity and precision can take a bit of time to fall into place, especially in slower conditions than those in Melbourne.

On paper, the head-to-head clearly favors the Spaniard. Alcaraz leads 4–0 in his direct encounters with Arthur Rinderknech. That said, the Frenchman has often managed to keep the score close, relying on a solid serve and an ability to shorten rallies when he is confident. The gaps have never been as clear-cut as the head-to-head might suggest.

Rinderknech is also coming in with some rather encouraging signs. His level of play is good, he can draw confidence from his recent Davis Cup performances, and he likes this kind of match where he has nothing to lose against a top player. Under these conditions, his commitment on serve and his willingness to take risks should allow him to hold his service games more often than one might think.

So the match doesn’t look that straightforward. Even though Alcaraz remains the logical favorite and will obviously end up making the difference, Rinderknech has the tools to stay in touch, notably thanks to his serve, despite the relatively slow conditions that favor the returner more.
