Heartbreak!
Two Argentinians we love, it's a shame to see them face each other in the first round
Etcheverry lived up to his standing last week and really got pushed around before logically cracking and giving in against Cerundolo. A good tournament in the sense that he beat solid guys and once again had the mental edge; it’s tough to beat him. The conditions are a bit worse this week in my opinion, he’ll be less able to make his heavy ball work, and it’s no coincidence that his track record in this tournament is rather poor. His buddy Comesana is a bit more comfortable here, he’s defending a semi-final and even took out Zverev! I do think he was playing better back then though; this year his level is quite a bit below what he showed, and I don’t really see any improvements from one match to the next. I’m really not sure the conditions suit him, despite his big tournament last year; he mainly beat Jarry and Zverev, who are exactly the kind of guys that really struggle in these conditions.
He’s down 3–1 against Etcheverry and comes in with no confidence, it would pretty much have to be the tournament as a whole that somehow makes him play better, but yeah, that feels thin to me. I really can’t find a strong argument that could swing the match his way, what about you?
