Travel, slow conditions and valuable points at stake in Doha

Zhang arrives in Doha full of confidence after winning a Challenger in Australia very easily. The level of play he’s shown recently is clearly positive, with clear domination over his opponents and a very encouraging momentum. However, the sequence isn’t ideal: a long trip, a change of continent, and above all much slower playing conditions than in Australia. In this context, it’s not certain that the Chinese player will feel comfortable right away.

Opposite him, Roberto Carballés Baena is having a rather average start to the season in terms of results. However, he showed a much more convincing level in the qualifiers here at ATP Doha, with two very good matches, solid and well controlled. The slow conditions clearly suit him better: they allow him to establish his long rallies, defend consistently, and wear down his opponents over time.

This match promises to be a real battle. Both players really need points to move closer to the top 100, which adds significant stakes to this encounter. Zhang will want to impose his power and build on his recent momentum, while Carballés Baena will look to extend the rallies and take advantage of the conditions to prolong the fight.
