Fonseca isn’t very reassuring..
The Brazilian says he was under huge pressure during his tournament in Buenos because he was defending his title, and indeed it was disastrous for a large part of the match.
Super tense and disastrous at the start of the match, Fonseca was spraying the court and trying to hype up the crowd to get himself in the zone, but it was totally forced… Yeah, he ran into an excellent Tabilo, but on his side it just wasn’t good, he makes so many errors… That title is one to forget and now we move on to Rio, THE tournament. The one where we discovered him and the one where he’s pushed by basically 100% of the guys in the stands. When I see the support he got last week, it’s looking insane, poor Monteiro who’s playing at home and is going to have nothing going for him…
Speaking of him, he came through qualies, he only got a qualifying wild card, the organizers let the young guys have them for the main draw. Maybe he’s a bit fired up, old man Monteiro, anyway he beat Vallejo (top seed in qualies and a guy on fire at the start of this season) and then Lajovic! Good history in this tournament, nice conditions for his game, and physically he can last a long time, he’s a tough guy to beat. He’s less talented than Fonseca, less powerful and so many other things too, but he’s got the experience and, in this case, zero pressure, he’s not the one people are expecting. Just for that reason I give him a chance to take at least a set. I also think that with the humidity and heavy conditions we might see Fonseca feel it physically at some point or another, that’s what we’re banking on!
