Carlitos under pressure?

A context conducive to a match that's more hard-fought than expected

Carlos Alcaraz has had a more complicated start to the tournament in Doha than usual. Without ever being in real danger, the Spaniard hasn’t completely dominated his first two rounds and hasn’t yet given off that impression of constant control we’re used to seeing when he’s at 100%. The timing isn’t always perfect, his game sometimes lacks fluidity, and that suggests his level can still rise, but that he’s not necessarily at the peak of his powers at the moment.

Opposite him, Karen Khachanov represents a very serious test. The Russian is a player capable of sustaining the pace from the baseline, relying on a solid serve, and bringing real physical intensity to the rallies. In these rather slow outdoor conditions, he has the weapons to hang in there, extend the rallies, and prevent Alcaraz from finishing points too quickly.

The overall context therefore suggests a relatively tight match scenario. Alcaraz is of course still the favorite thanks to his ability to make the difference in the key moments, but Khachanov has the profile to resist, especially on his service games, and to force closely contested sets.
