Paul has two speeds
Since the start of the US tour, Tommy Paul has been playing at two speeds. He’ll need to change that to beat Papa Fritz!
Well, yeah, Tommy Paul really isn’t quite there at the moment. He says there’s pressure playing at home. I can believe that, but all his matches are still a bit labored. He’ll definitely have to be better today since there’s a lot less margin against Fritz if he wants to win. But in terms of confidence, obviously you take a hit. Meanwhile Fritz keeps racking up wins since Dallas and seems able to hold up physically, raising his level of play when he can. He’s got Indian Wells in his sights so every match matters for optimal preparation. If he makes it to the final in Delray, he could load up on confidence and skip Acapulco to treat his niggles and get ready. Head-to-head, they’re more or less neck and neck. It usually comes down to form on the day, which affects their level and how effective their aggression is. Right now, Fritz is the more reliable one, but you’ve got to be careful to treat each match as a new match!
