Clay at altitude, the ideal surface for the great Hanfmann

Known and recognized for his qualities at altitude, Hanfmann usually has disappointing results during the Golden Swing but always lives up to his status here. Two quarter-finals and matches more convincing than in Rio or Buenos. At the same time, with his serve, his kick, and his forward-moving game, he’s got everything he needs to perform in these conditions. I can’t say I liked his match in Rio against JM Cerundolo, but the match-up turned out to be a disaster: he spent his time attacking balls above shoulder height and he really couldn’t be bothered to wait for his chances. He did make a little comeback though and was cheering himself on as well, so it wasn’t all bad. I’m quite hopeful we’ll see him at a good level.

And he’ll need a good level anyway against Lajovic, who is popping back up during this Golden Swing. Some good matches in Rio, finally a bit of positive momentum and the desire to play again at the highest level. Altitude isn’t really his strength or a weakness, I think it’s neutral for him. He’s only played here once and did well. On the other hand, he’s down 0–2 against Hanfmann in a match-up I don’t really like, I have to admit.

The German can rush his one-handed backhand right off the serve with his kick or during rallies. Lajo also plays a lot in rhythm, which is less problematic for Hanfmann than JM Cerundolo’s game. I don’t really like backing the German when he’s the favorite, but I do picture him winning this match so…
