A trap for Tallon?

Between physical doubts and positive momentum, a first round that’s tricky to assess

Griekspoor arrives in Dubai in generally interesting form. His Rotterdam tournament was solid and confirmed that he’s playing at a good level at the moment. Nevertheless, he finished the week with a shoulder pain, an issue that seems to be recurring lately. This is a real red flag, especially since his game relies heavily on his serve and on his ability to quickly take control of the rally. In fast conditions like here, the serve is important, which naturally raises questions about his ability to be at 100%.

On the other side, Virtanen is coming off some very good qualifying matches. He successively beat Vukic and then Struff, two well-established players on the tour, which clearly confirms his progress. The Finn is showing more and more consistency and has real weapons, especially on serve, to firmly establish himself in the top 100 this year. His aggressive and direct game fits perfectly with the fast conditions in Dubai.

On paper, we therefore have two players who enjoy this type of surface and who both look to dictate play quickly. Griekspoor’s relatively high odds, around 1.75, are quite surprising against a player who is much less proven than he is on the main tour. This shows that the market has already priced in the Dutchman’s physical discomfort and the uncertainties that come with it.
