Fran' easy?
Cerundolo is a clear favorite in this match, and we can’t really say that his opponent made a strong impression in the first round either.
13 double faults, 55 unforced errors and a 6–0 set conceded! I’m talking about Moller’s stats in the first round, and yet he’s the one who won the match! It was really bad from both sides, he at least has the merit of being the more enterprising one and his backhand is a gem, he can do everything on that side. As for the way he did it, that’s another story, I’m not sure altitude is a great thing for him given how many times he hit long. Anyway, all that to say this talented young player was far from his best, he even took an MTO to get some medication.
There’s going to have to be a real transformation in this second set, he needs to cut down on the errors, focus on his serve and just do everything better, because against Cerundolo that won’t cut it. The Argentinian was tired/injured in Rio but above all he didn’t feel like playing and was complaining about the organization and the scheduling, that’s not the Cerundolo we like, and I’m almost glad he’s coming in with a few days’ rest. He should also be fresh enough mentally to fight for the title this week; in his case he could become a huge threat at altitude ONLY if he stays disciplined. Because in these conditions you can start spraying balls all over the court and lose accuracy quickly; when you know Cerundolo’s forehand, you know he doesn’t hold back and he hits big. When everything’s landing in, it’s unplayable, but there’s a risk he’ll need some time to find his range. Apart from that small detail to sort out, this is supposed to be a relatively easy match for him.
