Interesting final in Acapulco, but I'll be brief...

Great tournament from each of the players. The first thing to highlight here for me is Tiafoe’s physical condition, which leaves some doubt in my mind. He alternates between being gassed and managing it, and then feeling better again. Adrenaline of course, a special atmosphere in Acapulco that we feel suits his personality well. But to me he’s much more worn out than Cobolli, and even if that matters a bit less in a final, it still matters. A bit like Tabilo vs Baez in Santiago, where the Chilean was spent but playing in front of his home crowd; it’s not an easy situation to handle for the player who’s in better shape. He has extra pressure, and he might even have to do a bit more for the bamboo to finally snap. Baez handled it perfectly by raising the intensity. And I think Cobolli could do the same. It’s the heart he puts into his work, and his composure in money time, that reassure me about his ability to handle this situation. The second aspect of the match is that it’s a final. On the main tour, Tiafoe has won 3 out of 3 (and lost 4 out of 4 in Challengers). Just like Cobolli (2 out of 2 on the main tour, and 0 out of 3 in Challengers), they’re big-occasion players, and they’re going to put their whole heart into it. So to me there’s not really anything that clearly favors one over the other there. Then there are the conditions, which I think slightly favor the Italian, who will be able to make his opponent work more, notably with his more loopy trajectories. And then there’s the match-up. Tiafoe leads 2–0. His potentially very aggressive tennis can reasonably bother Cobolli, who needs a bit of time to get organized, but will he be able to play that way effectively over an entire match? He’ll probably have to manage the momentum swings. He’s done that brilliantly so far, to the point where you could almost say he’s a survivor. Something neither Kecma nor Nakashima in the semi managed to do.

In short, I think the question here is whether Cobolli’s physical form, his improvements on hard court, and his current level will be enough to make a Tiafoe crack who produces his best tennis when he’s struggling and who seems to be enjoying a small alignment of the planets.
