Svajda recovered?
Zachary Svajda, who suffered from lower back pain that forced him to retire 10 days ago, is given a Wild Card here. Enough to say he’s recovered if he makes use of it?
Classic February injury puzzle with an in-form American, hard to handle in this format under slow conditions. I don’t know if you can dishonor a wildcard, or at least say early enough that you can’t honor it so it can be given to someone else. It’s been about ten days since he retired, on February 23rd. He didn’t push too hard, didn’t finish the set or the match, probably to protect himself and increase his chances for Indian Wells. This tournament means a lot to him because he’s from San Diego and must have played there often. It’s even possible the injury isn’t very serious, given the run of matches he’s had. Maybe just fatigue pain, like a groin strain or lower back pain. We’ll factor this risk into the odds. If he isn’t injured, then we’re talking about an American in great form, with the kind of game that can bother Marin Čilić, who’s also been playing well since the start of the season. His level is a bit lower in outdoor hard conditions. His game, with its flat trajectories, doesn’t really suit the Californian desert. His stats here aren’t impressive, considering the level the Croat has had throughout his career. It’s a match to approach with caution for a Croat capable of playing a match full of hard-fought rallies. We know his warrior mentality, how he never gives up. I therefore think this is a match that could be very tight between the two players.
