Tommy Paul, still not very reliable in 2026, even on his run to the final in Delray Beach, had way more off-matches than good ones. He started with Moutet, then Walton. Against Fritz, it seemed to get better. People thought he had taken the pressure off, because he was playing in Florida in front of his home crowd. However, he struggled against Tien, even though Tien is an excellent player with a match-up that’s not very good for Paul, and then he logically lost to Korda. So we don’t have a rock-solid top-10 version of Paul like in previous seasons, so I’m wary. In Indian Wells, he likes the conditions, and he chose not to go to Acapulco so he could rest and train properly. He should be in good shape; I watched a practice set with Alcaraz, and he might be going for too much and making errors too quickly, so I’m a bit on the fence about Paul. I’m expecting more from him, and I want to see his level before deciding. On Zizou’s side, it’s very good, but the match-up is completely different today. Against Struff, he played a good match, but the match-up was very comfortable for him against the German. Against Paul, it’s not the same: he’ll have to do everything better against Paul’s very complete and aggressive game, but I like Zizou’s attitude and level in this first match.
