NextGen Australian at her first WTA 1000

Emerson Jones represents the new wave of Australian tennis at just 17 years old. A former junior world No. 1 with two Grand Slam finals to her name in 2024, she has managed her transition to the pros well with three ITF titles, including a W75 in Sydney. Her start to the 2026 season features a record of 11 wins and 6 losses, including a quarterfinal in Austin and a victory over a top-30 player. This is her seventh main draw on the WTA Tour, and she comes in with the ambition of breaking into the world’s top 100 for good.

Linda Fruhvirtová has a special connection with the Miami Open. It was here that she burst onto the scene in 2022, reaching the round of 16 at just 16 years old after defeating Azarenka. In 2023, she went out in the first round, but she bounced back well in 2025 (last year), reaching the third round after coming through qualifying. This year, she’s confirming how comfortable she is on the Florida hard courts by once again making it through the qualies without dropping a set against Lepchenko and Brengle. With an 11–6 record in 2026, she’s clearly not here just to make up the numbers.

Yes, Emerson did beat Vekic last week, but everyone is beating Vekic at the moment. Even Lulu Sun got rid of her in straight sets yesterday. Not an achievement in itself, even if at 17, you’re delighted to add that to your résumé. First appearance as well for the very young Aussie in a W1000, that can make you shake when you’re facing someone used to these courts and even to Slams.

The duel promises to be electric between two players with identical records this season. Linda Fruhvirtová has an edge on serve with 0.52 aces per game compared to 0.10 for the Australian, and she is more proactive when it comes to breaking (0.91 chances per game), so she could seriously smother Emmy’s game. Admittedly, the young Australian has better statistical efficiency in 2026, but you have to put that into the W1000 context. We’re in with the big girls here!
