One round and then gone?
Cazaux got through one round in Phoenix before withdrawing, he just beat Barrios before losing?
No obvious physical issues for Cazaux during his win yesterday, I’ll even go further and say he played like steel, the Frenchman! 14 aces with his usual clean serving quality, but it’s in the rallies where he was excellent: super mobile, ultra aggressive whenever he could be, I didn’t see a player lacking rhythm at all. The quick turnaround will be tough to handle though, with so few matches under his belt and a big battle coming up against Tiafoe. I’m afraid he might struggle if it goes to a third set, for example. In the short term though, he really has the weapons to do something, especially since Tiafoe struggles against big servers.
The American is pretty inspired in this tournament overall, he likes the atmosphere, but he’s already slipped up before and I’m always wary of tricky first rounds with him. A tie-break is likely, for example. I don’t necessarily want to lay him because he’s playing well again at the moment and only really struggles against good players or when he’s physically cooked, but in terms of attitude and level he’s in a good place.
It seems a bit early to see Cazaux beating this type of player, but maybe we can look for something in between?
