Coco’s weakness is on her second serve, where she wins only 37.8 percent of the points, a disastrous stat against a returner of Belinda’s caliber, who peaks at 62.7 percent success on second-serve returns. And I insist, Belinda has worked on those fucking second serves and it’s a game changer!!!

Beyond the numbers, handling the second serve will be the X factor in this match. With only 0.26 double faults per game compared to 0.74 for Coco, Belinda gives away far fewer free points. In the Miami humidity, the Swiss player’s ability to hold her baseline and systematically attack the American’s shaky service games should tip the scales. Coco still hasn’t beaten a top 20 player this year but has won 6 of her last 8 quarterfinals and leads the H2H 4–2. They’ve played 5 matches on hard, 4 of them in 3 sets. There’s always a fight between the two. It was tough against Cîrstea and she benefited from a gassed Romanian in the 3rd set who was making mistakes we hadn’t seen before that point in the match. I’ll still give Coco an exceptional, out-of-this-world athletic defense, and she keeps that quality that saves her in matchups.
