Tailored for the occasion
Hanfmann and tournaments at "altitude" is a love story; as soon as the clay is lively, it works for him!
The altitude isn’t super high here, but every year you can see that the ball really takes spin and shoots through the court a lot as well, and quite a few players make the most of it, like Darderi/Griekspoor last year or Berrettini in 2024 too. These are perfect conditions for Hanfmann, I’m quite surprised it’s only the second time he’s playing this tournament when he should be loving it. His form is incredible, at 34 he’s finding a last (?) burst in his career and comes in with a final in Santiago and then a pretty solid tournament in Miami. No challenger events in between, he’s managing his schedule well and will arrive fresh and motivated again this week; I even see him as a potential dark horse. This first round is no gift because he could’ve drawn much easier, but De Jong isn’t at his best so…
Indeed, De Jong is still trying to find himself this season and outside of Challengers he has only one win on the main tour in 2026. Quite a few good matches, but systematically losses; he can’t manage to turn his good level of play into wins. He’s also just made a Challenger semi and might be gaining a bit of confidence before trying to back it up? I find him pretty inconsistent in what he produces on court: his serve can let him down and drop to 50% first-serve percentage, or he can rack up unforced errors without really knowing why, and then sometimes he plays insane matches. Hard to follow.
Given the current momentum and the playing conditions, Hanfmann is clearly the favorite in this match; we know De Jong can play really well but he shows it far too rarely...
