The queen of the place... in 2016!

We’re looking at both players reconnecting with clay here. Sloane hasn’t won a match on clay in almost two years. Between her fragile feet and a draining divorce that’s sapping her mental energy, she’s coming in with very few certainties and is clearly looking to rebuild confidence on a court she’s known since 2011!

Their January 2026 clash in Auckland was a nightmare for Sloane (6-7, 6-4, 6-2). Stephens led, showed some great tennis, then mentally shut down as soon as the match turned into a trench war.

We’ve got two players who lack real reference points on clay, with the American also short on match rhythm. However, Sloane’s theoretical technical toolkit is clearly superior, boosted by quality coaching. The green clay could give Sloane an edge here, but more in a best-of-two-sets format, because over three sets, the Mexican’s engine, combined with her low center of gravity, could turn the match around.
